Metalphoto processing is a durable photographic imaging process that creates extremely high-resolution graphics on photosensitive anodized aluminum. This process leaves a high-contrast image that is resistant to abrasion, corrosion, temperature, and chemicals. Metalphoto is the most trusted form of identification nameplate, data plates, or control panel engraving where permanence is critical, especially in the military and aerospace industries.
How does Metalphoto processing work?
Metalphoto’s proprietary technology permanently seals a UV-stable image inside anodized aluminum. The process works similarly to old-fashioned film photography development–we take a “negative” and expose it on special aluminum, then process that aluminum in a developer solution and then a fixer that stops the development. Finally, we seal the metalphoto in a solution that leaves a glass-clear, sapphire-hard anodized layer that resists chemicals, paint, abrasion, and dirt.

Benefits of Metalphoto processing
Metalphoto processing is one of the most durable engraving solutions available on the market, offering unparalleled resilience, image resolution, and easy readability. Specific advantages include:
Durability: Metalphoto tags resist fading, abrasion, and corrosion caused by exposure to UV light, salt, weather, industrial cleaners, and chemical fluids.
Precision: The Metalphoto process permanently seals a UV-stable image inside the aluminum, guaranteeing an extremely precise resolution for schematic diagrams, small fonts, bar codes, and QR codes.
Cost: Metalphoto is cost-effective; on average, it costs 30% less than etched and filled stainless steel.
Production efficiency: The production time for Metalphoto processing is shorter than etched and filled stainless steel, meaning you’ll get your tags and labels faster.
Versatility: Metalphoto tags and labels are available in a variety of thicknesses and finishes, and can be easily customized for individual applications.
Readability: Metalphoto tags afford extreme detail and contrast at any size.
Applications of Metalphoto processing
For over 50 years, military and aerospace engineers have specified Metalphoto processing for durable nameplates, data plates, barcode labels, service schematics, and control panels installed in harsh operating environments. Metalphoto tags are certified for 20-plus years in outdoor applications, and have received military and STANAG certifications for a variety of uses, allowing it to meet a wide variety of commercial, government, and military specifications. Notable certifications include: MIL-STD-130N, STANAG 2290, GGP-455B, MIL-DTL-15024F, MIL-P-19834B, and A-A-50271.
Metalphoto processing is an efficient and cost-effective solution for both large and small orders–the team at Engrave It Houston can mass-produce Metalphoto tags quicker and cheaper than many other engraving solutions.
How can Metalphoto tags be attached to your product?
Metalphoto tags can be drilled, so you can rivet, screw, or bolt them to your product. We can also manufacture Metalphoto tags with an adhesive back for stick-on applications.
